Alliance,
NE –
Nebraska Farmers Union (NEFU) Public Affairs Director, Graham Christensen, will
be a featured speaker at the 4th Annual Northwest Nebraska No-Till
Field Day. Christensen will be giving a
power point presentation informing farmers and ranchers about the financial
opportunities available to them through the Carbon Credit Program.
The
event will be held at The Watson Brothers Farm on Tuesday August 7th,
2007 and will run from 8 am to 3 pm.
Watson Brothers Farm (1561 County Road 61, Alliance, NE) is located
approximately 9 miles north of Alliance, 4 miles east on Jefferson Road (across
from Simplot – Berea and by the Zochol Feedlot Sign), then north for ˝ mile on
CR 61 to the Watson Farm Driveway.
As an aggregator for the Chicago Climate Exchange, Farmers Union helps get farmers enrolled into the program, and considers carbon trading as an innovative way to improve farm income through the use of economically viable and environmentally sound management practices.
There
are a variety of ways that farmers can earn income through the carbon credit
program. These practices include
no-till farming, new grasslands seeding, rangeland management program, methane
recovery, and forestry projects. For
no-till and grassland programs it is still possible to receive credit for the
2006 and 2007 production years if enrollment is completed by the August 15th
registration deadline. Program details
and sign up are available online at:
www.nfu.org.
The
event will also include guest speakers Ray Ward, President of Ward Laboratories
in Lincoln, Scotts Bluff Extension Agent Dean Yonts, a tour of no-till
specialist Mark Watson’s Farm, and include lunch.
The
Upper Niobrara White Natural Resources District, Natural Resources Conservation
Service, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln are sponsoring the event.
Nebraska
Farmers Union is a general farm organization dedicated to protecting and
enhancing the quality of life and economic well-being of family farmers and
ranchers, and their rural communities.
