Nebraska Farmers Union To Hold 95th Annual Convention In

Grand Island December 5-6th At Howard Johnson Riverside Inn

“Keeping The Faith, Building For The Future” is the theme for the 95th annual state convention of the Nebraska Farmers Union (NEFU).

John Hansen, President of the Nebraska Farmers Union said the theme reflects his organization’s commitment to staying the course despite volatile economic times for production agriculture, while also working to build a more stable and profitable future.  “Farmers, ranchers, and rural communities have survived tough economic times before, and when we work together, we have been able to build better futures,” Hansen said.   “We have an outstanding set of state and national speakers for Convention.”

Hansen said that the 95th NEFU state convention focus was on Re-Thinking U.S. trade policy, embracing new ideas to help young people return to their farms, ranches, or rural communities, tackle the challenges facing livestock producers and ethanol production, and keeping our members informed on the tremendous success Nebraska Farmers Union had the past year in creating new economic opportunities from carbon sequestration and farmer and community owned wind energy.

The NEFU Convention will hear from Governor Heineman Friday afternoon, United States Senator Ben Nelson and State Senators Dierks, Dubas, Karpisek, and newly elected Kate Sullivan Saturday morning.

Other featured speakers include Jeff Frengel, Coalition For A Prosperous America Board member and Director of Governmental Relations for Penn United Technology for the Friday noon luncheon, Tom Buis, National Famers Union President, who played a major role in helping shape the new Farm Bill, for Friday evening’s banquet, and Bill Bullard, CEO of R-CALF for the closing Saturday noon luncheon.

Jim Jenkins, Chairman of the Nebraska Ethanol Board and NFU President Tom Buis will discuss “Food VS Fuel” and related renewable energy issues Friday morning.

Dr. Weldon Sleight, Dean of the University of Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture at Curtis will speak on “Youth Enterprise Ownership:  The Answer to Revitalizing Rural Nebraska Communities” Friday afternoon.

Tom Buis, National Farmers Union President and Bill Bullard, CEO of R-CALF will discuss the challenges facing livestock producers Saturday morning.

“We have a great program with top-notch state and national presenters on a wide range of topics critical to the success of family farm agriculture. We urge all Farmers Union members to attend.  In addition to elections and conducting the organization’s business, we enjoy meeting old friends while meeting new ones that share our commitment to family farm and ranch agriculture. The public is always welcome.  If you have questions, call our office at 402-476-8815,” Hansen said.
