NEBFARMPAC Releases 2010 General Election Candidate Endorsements

(Lincoln, Neb.)  The Nebraska Farmers Union’s Political Action Committee, NEBFARMPAC, announced its endorsements for the 2010 General Election.

In addition to its June endorsement of Governor Dave Heineman for re-election in the 2010 General Election, NEBFARMPAC endorsed candidates for the Legislature and Nebraska Public Power District.  No endorsements were made for Congress.

The twenty endorsed  candidates for the Nebraska Legislature include Dave Pankonin in LD2, Pete Pirsch in LD4, John Nelson in LD6, Burke Harr in LD8, Bob Krist in LD10, Steve Lathrop in LD12, Brad Ashford in LD20, Greg Adams in LD24, Amanda McGill in LD26, Bill Avery in LD28, Norman Wallman in LD30, Russ Karpisek in LD32, Annette Dubas in LD34, John Wightman in LD36, Tom Carlson in LDLD38, Cap Dierks in LD40, Thomas Hansen in LD42, Mark Christensen in LD44, Danielle Conrad in LD46, and John Harms in LD48. Nineteen of the endorsed candidates are incumbents.

The four endorsed candidates for Nebraska Public Power District Director are Ron Larsen in District 3, Larry Linstrom in District 4, Gary Thompson in District 8, and Virgil Froehlich in District 10.  All four NPPD candidates are incumbents, three are unopposed and only Gary Thompson is in a contested race.

Gale Lush of Wilcox, NEBFARMPAC President said “This election cycle, there are a large number of incumbent State Senators four years through their eight year term limits.  The second four year term they should have the benefit of understanding the process, the issues, the budgeting process, and be ready to assume more leadership roles.  Given the size of the pending budget crisis next session, we felt it was a benefit to have Senators with more experience and perspective making the tough decisions on how to best balance our state budget.  As a result, we are inclined to stick with people with proven track records and a steady hand on the wheel of government.  It is disappointing that eight, or one-third of the seats did not have challenges.  We suspect that some potential challengers decided to wait four years to run for an open seat.  In the long run, it is not healthy to have less competition.”

NEBFARMPAC is the political arm of the Nebraska Farmers Union, the state’s second largest and second oldest general farm organization, organized in 1913.  Nebraska Farmers Union has over 5,300 farm and ranch families, and strives to protect and enhance the economic well being and quality of life of family farmers and ranchers, and the rural communities they live in through education, cooperation, and legislation based on the policies developed and adopted through grassroots membership.
