“Working Together To Harvest Rural Opportunities”

is Theme For Three Nebraska Farmers Union

Workshops on Rural Economic Development

Nebraska Farmers Union announced three workshops that will focus on rural cooperative economic development opportunities.  The first workshop will be held in Norfolk at Northeast Community College on Tuesday, November 15th.  The second workshop will be Wednesday, November 16th in Beatrice at the Holiday Inn Express.  The third workshop will be Thursday, November 17th in Kearney at the University of Nebraska Student Union in the Ponderosa Room.

All three workshops have registration at 9:00 am, and the program beginning at 9:30 AM running until 5:00 PM.  The event is open to all members of the public, although an RSVP to the Nebraska Farmers Union office at 402-476-8815 is required. The registration fee is $10 per person, which includes the morning and afternoon refreshments, and the noon meal.

The day-long seminars on rural economic development will bring together some of the state’s premier experts on co-op development, direct marketing, grant funding, and value-added opportunities for farmers and ranchers.

All three workshops will include a new unique opportunity for rural cooperative economic development, community owned wind energy.  Mark Lindquist, an energy policy specialist from the Minnesota Project will share how rural Minnesota communities are working together to develop community owned wind projects using the C-BED (Community Based Energy Development) structure and other development models.  Minnesota is the recognized national leader in rural wind energy development.  NEFU will also present the latest information on wind energy development potential in Nebraska, including the recently released wind maps of Nebraska made available through the (NREL) National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the Nebraska Department of Energy.

The three workshops will also include presenters from USDA Rural Development, NE Cooperative Development Center, Center for Rural Affairs, and the Nebraska Farmers Union.  State Senator Matt Connealy will be the luncheon speaker in Norfolk, State Senator Lavon Heidemann will provide the opening presentation in Beatrice, and Chancellor Doug Kristensen of the University of Nebraska at Kearney is the scheduled luncheon speaker in Kearney.

Nebraska Farmers Union is the state’s second largest and oldest general farm organization representing over 4,500 farm and ranch families and the rural communities they live in.  The mission of Nebraska Farmers Union is to improve the economic well being and quality of life of family farmers and ranchers, and their rural communities.
